- [ ] Prepare open-ended questions about characters, themes and choices in the book
- [ ] Include a question that allows different interpretations
- [ ] Invite members to bring a question or a passage of their own
- [ ] Check any author or historical details you plan to introduce against reliable sources
- [ ] Choose someone to guide the discussion and keep an eye on time

## Set up the space

- [ ] Arrange seats so everyone can see and hear each other
- [ ] Check lighting and leave clear access routes
- [ ] For an online meeting, test the link and basic audio settings
- [ ] Ask about dietary needs if offering refreshments
- [ ] Keep food and drinks simple enough that hosting does not interrupt the discussion
- [ ] Have your book, notes and questions within reach

## During the meeting

- [ ] Welcome new members and briefly introduce everyone

- [ ] Start with a short opening response from anyone who wants to share
- [ ] Ask one discussion question at a time
- [ ] Invite quieter members to contribute without putting them under pressure
- [ ] Bring the conversation back to the book when it wanders too far
- [ ] Make room for disagreement while keeping comments respectful
- [ ] Refer to passages when they help explain a point
- [ ] Leave a few minutes for final thoughts before the agreed finish time

## Before the next meeting

- [ ] Choose or shortlist the next book
- [ ] Confirm who will host or lead next time
- [ ] Agree the next date and reading scope
- [ ] Send the practical details to members who could not attend
- [ ] Note one change that would make the next meeting easier to join
