# Home bookshelf care checklist

Care for your home book collection: review shelf conditions, remove dust gently and improve storage without attempting repairs on fragile books.

## Prepare a small section

- [ ] Choose one shelf to work on at a time
- [ ] Clear a clean dry surface for the books
- [ ] Wash and dry your hands before handling books
- [ ] Keep food and drinks away from the work area
- [ ] Gather a soft dry brush and clean dry cloth
- [ ] Identify fragile books that need separate attention

## Check and clean

- [ ] Remove books by supporting the volume rather than pulling the spine top
- [ ] Check the empty shelf for dampness or pests
- [ ] Clean the shelf and let it dry fully before restocking
- [ ] Brush loose dust gently away from closed page edges
- [ ] Avoid applying household cleaners to books
- [ ] Note damaged bindings without attempting tape repairs

## Improve storage

- [ ] Return ordinary books upright with suitable support
- [ ] Use bookends to prevent leaning where needed
- [ ] Avoid packing books so tightly that removal causes damage
- [ ] Store suitable oversized books flat with limited stacking
- [ ] Keep the collection away from direct sun and damp areas
- [ ] Seek conservation advice for valuable or badly damaged books
