# Winter container plant checklist

Prepare balcony and patio plants for winter: check hardiness, protect pots, improve drainage and plan care through cold spells.

## Assess your plants

- [ ] List the plants that will stay outdoors
- [ ] Check the winter hardiness of each plant
- [ ] Identify frost-tender plants that need indoor shelter
- [ ] Choose a suitable bright space for plants brought inside
- [ ] Inspect plants for pests before moving them indoors
- [ ] Check pots for cracks before cold weather arrives

## Prepare the pots

- [ ] Clear blocked drainage holes
- [ ] Raise outdoor pots on stable pot feet
- [ ] Remove saucers that collect winter rain
- [ ] Group outdoor pots in a sheltered position
- [ ] Wrap vulnerable containers with suitable insulating material
- [ ] Keep breathable frost protection ready for tender foliage

## Check through winter

- [ ] Check the local forecast before a cold spell
- [ ] Check soil moisture before watering
- [ ] Water only when needed during frost-free periods
- [ ] Remove fallen leaves blocking drainage
- [ ] Check protective covers after strong winds
- [ ] Schedule a weekly check of sheltered plants
